Earlier this semester I began a pen-pal project with my Senior II students. They are currently corresponding with high school students in North Carolina. Three teachers and I teamed up for this project in order to foster cultural understanding and help all of our students develop better English skills. But, I couldn’t stop there….it’s one thing to talk to a foreigner…it’s another to step into his shoes….

I have been collecting pictures from my former high school students for “a day in the life” lesson. Two of my former American students documented their lives from daybreak to sunset in order for my Chinese students to better understand what a typical teenager’s life consists of.

I did the same.

After being badgered by friends and family members (i.e. my mother and Ty) because of an inactive blog, I decided to create a new one. Unfortunately, due to Chinese internet restrictions, I am no longer able to access my former blog (the beckoning counts)….hence the sudden halt of postings. Thanks to Ivan–to whom I constantly feel indebted–I should be able to post on this website until I return to the states next year.

After living here for three months, I have decided it’s time to incorporate more Chinese into my daily routine: writing, conversations, reading material, etc. Moreover, since most of my readers are avid learners, I am going to start posting new Chinese phrases every once in a while. Hopefully, this will act as a multi-tiered learning tool—it helps me remember words, tones, phrases, and characters and gives you an introduction to this mysterious language….

Today’s phrase is quite simple: 沃是外国教师 (wo3 shi4 wai4guo2 jiao4shi1)—I am a foreign teacher.

On another note, I have a few updates including a Chinese wedding, an art session where my portrait was sketched, and the upcoming adventures of Ty.
